Vicky MacQueen: Expects England to experiment against Spain

Sky Bet

Former England women’s rugby international Vicky MacQueen is not expecting Spain to give England much trouble when the two sides meet in the Women’s Rugby World Cup on Tuesday.

Gary Street’s side are brimming with confidence for the Pool A clash on Tuesday following an emphatic 65-3 victory against Samoa in their tournament opener.

England boast a 9-0 winning record over Spain and beat their European counterparts 61-0 when the two sides last met in 2012.

And MacQueen is expecting another good performance from England as they continue their quest to win the World Cup after three consecutive final defeats to New Zealand.

“I expect Spain will offer a little bit against England but I do think they are limited somewhat and will very much be the underdogs,” MacQueen told Sky Sports.

“I think England will be very much in control of the game and I expect them to put on a really good show and keep the ball moving, keep the ball alive and show their superior fitness and skill level.

“While they shouldn’t underestimate Spain they should also be confident in their ability that they are the better side and the superior team.”

Street has made 12 changes to the side that beat Samoa last week, but as one of the most experienced squads in the tournament, MacQueen is convinced England have sufficient quality to make a statement.

“I’m sure they’ll try a few more combinations but defence is key and they’ll be wanting to make sure there’s a tight line against Spain,” she said.

“I’ll think they'll try new things, things that they may be able to use in this tournament in the future. They’ll try some new players to give them experience and I think they’ll keep the tempo high and look to put some points on the board.”

Watch England take on Spain from FFR Headquarters live on Sky Sports 1 from 2.30pm on Tuesday
