David Goffin: Secured maiden ATP Tour title in Austria
David Goffin fought back from the loss of the opening set to claim his maiden ATP Tour title on the clay courts at the Kitzbuhel Cup.
The 23-year-old Belgian beat Dominic Thiem of Austria 4-6 6-1 6-3 in a match that lasted exactly two hours.
The decisive moments of the contest arrived at 1-1 in the second set when Goffin recovered from 15-40 down on his own serve to save the break and start a winning run of seven straight games.
The world No 78 broke serve twice in the second set and added two more in the decider.
Both players were contesting their first ATP Tour final with 20-year-old Thiem ranked 28 places higher than his victorious opponent.
Goffin clinched the title on his first match point as a dejected Thiem crumbled losing 11 of the last 14 games. It was the first Belgian success on the ATP Tour since Xavier Malisse triumphed in Delray Beach in 2007.
And since losing to Andy Murray in the first round at Wimbledon, Goffin has enjoyed a golden run of form winning 20 straight matches that has earned him three titles on the Challenger Tour.
"It's a great day for me, to win an ATP (World Tour) 250," sthe 23-year-old Belgian said.
"You work so much in the fitness room and on the court for a moment like today. You play so many practices and so many matches to have this emotion, so when you win the match point you can't control it."
