All-Stars Jon Lester and David Price were among a number of big names traded on what proved to be a busy MLB deadline day.

Boston Red Sox left-hander Lester was dealt to the Oakland Athletics, where he becomes part of their race for a playoff berth, along with outfielder Jonny Gomes for Home Run Derby king Yoenis Cespedes.

Price, who had been rumoured to be leaving the Tampa Bay Rays last winter, was finally traded on Thursday and he becomes a member of the Detroit Tigers as part of a three-team deal.

The Tigers sent Austin Jackson to the Seattle Mariners as part of the deal with Tampa receiving prospect Nick Franklin from Seattle and pitcher Drew Smyly from Detroit.

As well as Lester, Boston also traded pitcher John Lackey to the St Louis Cardinals, receiving utility player Allen Craig and starter Joe Kelly in exchange.

The Atlanta Braves acquired second baseman Emilio Bonifacio and left-hander James Russell from the Chicago Cubs for catching prospect Victor Caratini and cash considerations.

And the Houston Astros picked up two more prized prospects to add to their long list, with outfielders Jake Marisnick and Austin Wates part of a deal that sent pitcher Jarred Cosart and two minor league players to the Miami Marlins.

The New York Yankees added depth to their infield with deals for Arizona Diamondbacks utility player Martin Prado and Red Sox shortstop Stephen Drew.

Shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera was traded to the Washington Nationals by the Cleveland Indians and the Minnesota Twins acquired a starting pitcher with Tommy Milone joining the club from Oakland for outfielder Sam Fuld.
