Rory Grugan converts an injury-time free to snatch a draw for Armagh
Armagh substitute Rory Grugan converted a last-gasp free to snatch a 0-14 to 0-14 draw against Monaghan in a gripping Ulster semi-final in Clones.
Grugan nailed the equalising free in front of the posts after referee Joe McQuillan penalised Ryan Wylie for a jersey-pull, and the Orchard County will have their full compliment of players available for the replay on July 6.
Defences were on top for large spells at St Tiernach's Park, with both teams piling players behind the ball. Jamie Clarke was the pick of the Armagh forwards during the first half, with Conor McManus impressing for the hosts.
It was Clarke who opened the scoring after just 20 seconds and after Monaghan replied through frees from Rory Beggan and Jack McCarron, Clarke set up Stefan Campbell for Armagh’s second point.
It was a mark of how tight the first half turned out to be that Monaghan goalkeeper Beggan was their main source of scores.
Beggan kicked half of the Farney County’s first-half tally and his third point put them 0-6 to 0-3 ahead on 22 minutes and in prime position to kick on.
However, they failed to register another score in the first half and Armagh replied with points from Tony Kernan - who replaced the black-carded Kyle Carragher - Aidan Forker and Campbell to leave the sides deadlocked at the break.
Clarke and McManus swapped points upon the restart before Monaghan’s chances took a huge blow when McManus got a black card for obstruction on Finian Moriarty.
It meant that points were hard to come by in open play for Monaghan and they relied on Beggan’s sure kicking to see them into a lead.
Dick Clerkin and Stephen Gollogly chipped in as well and when Chris McGuinness put Monaghan 0-14 to 0-11 ahead with seven minutes remaining, it looked like Monaghan were in the clear.
But back came Armagh. Clarke and Campbell made it a one-point game as the game entered injury time, and Grugan landed the late pressure free to force a replay.
Monaghan: R Beggan 0-5 (5f), K Hughes , C McManus (1f), S Gollogly 0-2 each, J McCarron (1f), D Clerkin, C McGuinness 0-1 each.
Armagh: J Clarke, S Campbell, T Kernan (2f) 0-3 each, M Shields, A Forker, K Dyas, S Forker, R Grugan (f) 0-1 each.
