Carlow came from behind to record a morale-boosting 0-17 to 1-13 win over Waterford in their All-Ireland SFC qualifier at Dr Cullen Park.

The Barrowsiders trailed by five points after 38 minutes but hit six successive scores to take the lead for the first time midway through the second half.

Waterford rallied to level proceedings but late points from substitute Jack Kennedy and Daniel St Ledger secured their first victory in the qualifiers since 2005.

Carlow suffered a crushing 27-point loss to Meath in the Leinster Championship earlier this month, and they fell behind early on against the Deise as Liam Ó Lionáin and Paul Whyte opened the scoring.

Seamus Kinsella got Carlow off the mark, with Whyte replying for Waterford, while the home side saw three efforts come back off the woodwork during the first half.

Points from St Ledger and Cathal Coughlan reduced Carlow’s deficit to the minimum late in the first half, but their good work was undone on 33 minutes when Ó Lionáin found the net after a defensive error.

A Kinsella free left Carlow trailing by 1-6 to 0-6 at the interval and Waterford started the second half strongly, with Whyte registering two points from placed balls.

Ó Lionáin took his tally to 1-2 as Waterford extended their lead to four points, but they were rocked by a spirited Carlow rally.

Eoghan Ruth, Benny Kavanagh, St Ledger and Michael Meaney all pointed to bring Carlow level, and further scores from Kinsella and Kieran Nolan put them in front.

Whyte kicked two frees to restore parity as Carlow had Ciaran Moran black-carded before Willie Minchin received a second yellow card in injury time.

However, Kinsella and St Ledger secured victory for Carlow at the death. Whyte kicked his eighth point in added time but it was too late for Waterford, whose manager Niall Carew is set to consider his future next week.

Scorers

Carlow: D St Ledger 0-4 (3f, 1 ’45), S Kinsella (2f), C Coughlan (1f) 0-3 each, B Kavanagh 0-2, E Ruth, K Nolan, M Meaney, D Foley, J Kennedy 0-1 each.

Waterford: P Whyte 0-8 (5f), L Ó Lionáin 1-2, S Briggs 0-2, T Prendergast 0-1.
