Colin Montgomerie carded a superb final round of 65 to take victory in the Senior PGA Championship at Harbor Shores in Michigan.

The 50-year-old Scot has famously never won a major as a regular professional but clinched his first senior major at the fifth attempt.

It was Montgomerie’s first victory of any description as a senior as well as his first individual win on American soil.

Montgomerie finished the tournament on 13-under-par having shot below 70 in each of the tournament’s four rounds.

Five-time Open champion Tom Watson also signed for a 65 on the final day to finish in second position, four shots adrift of Montgomerie.

Jay Haas and Bernhard Langer shared third place on seven under after final rounds of 67 and 70 respectively.

Watson made a charge for victory when he birdied the second and fifth holes and then started the back nine by picking up two more shots.

Montgomerie’s lead was trimmed to a single shot at one stage but found a response by birdieing holes eight, nine and 10.

Three more birdies at 12, 14 and 15 saw Montgomerie pull away to victory. On the final hole he pulled his approach shot badly, only to see his ball bounce off the grandstand and onto the middle of the green.

Langer’s hopes were ended when he double-bogeyed the 11th hole, while Haas had six birdies and two bogeys in his round.
