Karen Carney: On target for Birmingham in 1-1 draw
Birmingham City sit two points clear at the top of the Women's Super League 1 after drawing 1-1 with Liverpool at the Select Security Stadium.
Reigning WSL champions Liverpool missed out on the chance to leapfrog their opposition in the table in a match where both Karen Carney and Fara Williams scored from the spot.
Birmingham went ahead in the first half after confusion in the Liverpool defence led to keeper Libby Stout taking out Jade Moore, with Carney dispatching the resulting penalty.
Liverpool came out stronger after the break and equalised through Williams' penalty, but despite both sides creating chances, neither could nick the winner.
The Liverpool mix-up occurred in the 24th minute between Gemma Bonner and Stout, resulting in the Liverpool keeper bringing down Moore for the penalty.
Three minutes later Birmingham could have had another goal as Remi Allen's shot needed to be cleared off the line by Corina Schroder.
In the 65th minute Hannah Dale was tripped in the box by Aoife Mannion, leaving Williams to equalise from the resulting penalty.
The home side had a chance to win it when Kate Longhurst played Gemma Davison through in the 81st minute, but the Liverpool forward was denied by Blues keeper Rebecca Spencer.
