St Helens coach Nathan Brown admits his side are lucky to still be in the Tetley's Challenge Cup after they were paired with Leeds in the stand-out tie of the fifth round.

Brown watched the Super League leaders preserve their 100 per cent record in 2014 by snatching a 17-16 win over his former club Huddersfield in a pulsating fourth round tie at the John Smith's Stadium.

They trailed 16-8 after hooker Shaun Lunt had scored the second of his two tries for the Giants, who had England forward Brett Ferres sent off 15 minutes from the end for a dangerous tackle on full-back Jonny Lomax.

Saints took advantage of the extra man, going ahead when scrum-half Luke Walsh landed the match-winning drop goal before Huddersfield captain Danny Brough had a similar effort controversially disallowed by referee Phil Bentham, who opted not to refer the close call to video referee Ian Smith.

"Lady Luck definitely shone on us. I thought we saved our worst performance for our biggest game."

"Lady Luck definitely shone on us," Brown said. "I thought we saved our worst performance for our biggest game.

"It's unfortunate for Huddersfield because they played really well and probably did deserve the result but that's what the cup's all about.

"Obviously the sending-off had a big impact."
