Kelly Brown: Pleased with Scotland's progress

Scotland captain Kelly Brown believes his side has made progress during the course of the Six Nations despite recording just one victory.

Their campaign began with heavy back-to-back defeats to Ireland and England but they have looked more competitive in their last two outings.

A last-gasp win against Italy in Rome was followed by a creditable 17-19 defeat to France at Murrayfield on Saturday and Brown has taken confidence from those performances.

"If you look at the stats and the performances over the course of the Six Nations, I feel we have definitely improved," said the Saracens back-row.

"We know that we need to keep on with that improving, because whilst we are improving, so are all the other nations.

"We need to keep on working hard and pushing the bar higher and higher.

"We certainly take a lot of confidence from the last two performances but we didn't win (against France)."

Optimism

Scotland's final game of the tournament comes on Saturday when they travel to Wales and although they cannot match or better last season's third-placed finish, a victory would see them equal their 2013 tally of four points.

"We need to learn but I feel as a side we are doing that, and we go down to Wales full of optimism," he added.

"The Welsh are obviously the reigning champions so they are a very tough side.

"But we feel when we are either at or very near our best we can be a challenge for anyone and match anyone, and that's what we are looking to do on Saturday."
