Jonathan Sexton: Should know on Thursday if he is fit to face Italy in Dublin this weekend

Ireland will decide on Thursday whether Jonathan Sexton will face Italy in Saturday's Six Nations match in Dublin.

The fly-half is struggling with a thumb ligament injury suffered at Twickenham last month.

However, Ireland's assistant coach John Plumtree revealed that the latest scans of Sexton's hand appear to show no lasting damage.

Plumtree said: "Johnny trained on Tuesday and he did really well.

"He was sort of in and out with Paddy (Jackson) and Mads (Ian Madigan), so we'll make that final call on Thursday but he didn't look in too much discomfort at all.

"It looks like the scan is clear, so again it's just how that thumb feels.

"I guess there are certain aspects of the game, like tackling and grappling, that will give it a true test.

"So we'll give all that a bit of test on Thursday."
