Southampton boss Mauricio Pochettino felt his side were unfortunate to suffer a 3-0 home defeat at the hands of Liverpool.

The Reds triumphed at St Mary's thanks to goals from Luis Suarez and substitute Raheem Sterling, with captain Steven Gerrard smashing home a late penalty.

The Saints had plenty of opportunities to get back on terms after falling 1-0 down, but could not find a way past Simon Mignolet.

And Pochettino admitted that the home side were made to pay for their failure to take any of the chances which they created.

"I thought it was a very unfair result considering the amount of chances we created."

Pochettino, speaking through an interpreter, told Sky Sports News: "I thought the first half was very good and we didn't deserve to have conceded that goal.

"Over the 90 minutes we played against a team who is competing to win the league but I thought we deserved a bit more from the game.

"We were just not clinical. I though the key moment was that we created so many chances when we were 1-0 down, but if you don't score against a team such as Liverpool it becomes very difficult.

"They were able to be a lot more effective in front of goal than we were.

"I thought they were more defensive from the start, they left Sterling on the bench.

"We were just unlucky with the first goal. We controlled many phases of the first half and weren't able to equalise.

"I thought it was a very unfair result considering the amount of chances we created."
