Sir Bradley Wiggins has revealed that he intends to ride the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow later this year.

The Team Sky rider broke the news while discussing his goals for later in the season, and told Cycling News: "I haven't got a gold medal from the Commonwealths so it would be nice to add that on. It's a couple of days after the Tour de France, so for the sake of carrying on for a few more days and doing it, I am down for it.

"I forgot about the Commonwealths, I'm glad you reminded me actually because I've got to fill a form in otherwise I can't ride it."

The Tour de France remains Wiggins's main priority for this season however, and the 33-year-old is already excited by the prospect of it starting on British roads.

He added: "We had a preview of what it's going to be like with the Olympics, and it's going to be massive, I think, in England. They are going to be some of the hardest days in the race as well because of the amount of people that are going to be there watching it.

"With the first stage set to end in a bunch sprint, there are a lot of people who will be looking to take the [yellow] jersey, and that brings pressure in itself. It's going to be challenging to remain upright and out of trouble on those days, and the aim is to get into France without losing any time."

Once the Tour is over, Wiggins will travel straight to Glasgow to compete in the Commonwealth Games - which commence four days later - to hone his condition for the road race on Sunday August 3.

After representing England there, he will then target the World Championships in Spain, with a trip to the Vuelta a Espana likely to help him prepare for that race instead of defending his Tour of Britain crown.

Wiggins, who finished third in the 2011 Vuelta, said: "I'd love to ride the Vuelta again, now that I've ticked the box of the Tour of Britain. I'd love to use it as preparation for the World Championships as Fabian [Cancellara] and Tony [Martin] tend to do every year and really try to have a good crack at them."
