West Indies will be without Chris Gayle for the one-day series against England, which gets under way later this month.

The 34-year-old batsman is to miss the three ODIs in Antigua and stay in Jamaica for scans to try to identify the cause of stiffness in his lower back.

He will be replaced in the side by Dwayne Smith, who impressed during a spell with Sussex between 2008 and 2010.

The West Indies are hopeful Gayle will return for the three Twenty20 internationals against Stuart Broad's side in Barbados in order to prove his form and fitness in time for the defence of their short-format World Cup crown in Bangladesh.

Blow

Broad admitted that the absence of big-hitting Gayle is a big blow for the West Indies.

"We know what Chris Gayle offers. He can win a game on his own," said Broad.

"I'm sure the West Indies will be desperate to get him fit for the World Cup.

"I'm sure they won't risk him too much in the next few weeks.

"As an England side, you want to test yourself against the best players in the world, and Chris Gayle is one of those."

Gayle has scored 8,743 ODI runs for the West Indies at an average of 37.52.
