Team GB have named Andrew Matthews in their four-man bobsleigh team after Craig Pickering was forced to drop out through injury.

Matthews was named as the official reserve (P accredited) athlete in January and the former sprinter will now have his chance at glory after a back injury problem meant Pickering was unable to compete.

"Up until yesterday I didn't know whether I was going to be pushing in GBR2 or not. It is never nice to replace an injured teammate and I am wishing Craig a speedy recovery," Matthews told Team GB's official website.

"I have a job to do and I am looking forward to competing against the best athletes in the world and making my Olympic debut for Team GB.

"I came to Sochi as a P accredited athlete and was making the most of my time here by soaking up the atmosphere.

Hungry

"However, as competition started and I watched Lamin (Deen) and John (Baines) compete in the two-man event it made me hungry and I wanted more than ever to make it onto the start line."

Team GB Bobsleigh Team Leader Gary Anderson believes Matthews will be a more than able substitute for Pickering.

"We selected Andy as our P accredited athlete back in January because he is an incredibly versatile bobsleigh athlete," he said.

"We knew that if the team was troubled by injury Andy would be able to step up.

"Andy has considerable World Cup experience and I am confident he'll do a fantastic job for the team here in Sochi."
