Scotland have called up Edinburgh back Jack Cuthbert for their Six Nations clash with fellow strugglers Italy on Saturday.

Cuthbert, who can play either at full-back or on the wing and won his only cap in 2011, will join the squad after Sean Maitland was ruled out of the rest of the tournament with knee and ankle injuries in the defeat to Ireland two weeks ago.

He moves up to the main squad having played in the 'A' team's 16-16 draw with England Saxons last month.

Scrum-half Grayson Hart has been asked to train with Scott Johnson's squad after back-up No 9 Chris Cusiter was forced to sit out having reported back from weekend duty with Glasgow Warriors with a calf strain.

Scotland team doctor James Robson said: "Having completed the game for Glasgow Warriors at Cardiff at the weekend, Chris Cusiter subsequently reported to national camp today with a tight calf.

"Given the proximity of Saturday's international in Rome, Chris will undergo a precautionary scan at the SPIRE Murrayfield Hospital this afternoon in order that we can have a more definitive assessment."

Like Italy, Scotland have lost both their opening two matches, including the 20-0 thumping by England a week ago and the game in Rome is a potential wooden spoon decider.
