England batting coach Graham Gooch has offered his support to under-fire captain Alastair Cook as the backlash to Ashes humiliation rumbles on.

Kevin Pietersen, the star of many of England's victories during the golden period that preceded the disastrous 2013/2014 tour Down Under, was told his England career was over on Tuesday.

Rumours quickly circulated that Cook had been part of a three-man panel who had summoned the 33-year-old batsman to inform him of the decision, leading to renewed criticism of his leadership.

But Gooch, a former England captain who coached Cook through the ranks at Essex, is adamant that the 29-year-old is the right man to lead a revival.

He said: "I sincerely believe he is. He's well respected. He will put his body on the line for his country.

"I don't see any reason why he will not be a successful leader again in the future. Yes, he needs to make improvements. Yes, he needs to look at things himself, the way he goes about things.

"But that's the same with any player, and any cricketer, throughout his career. They're always looking to upgrade and make improvements to themselves and the way they go about their cricket."

"I'm sure he'll have a good rest and I'm sure he'll look forward to coming back here and playing for Essex at the start of the season. He'll be committed to do well for Essex before the international season starts."

Cook's captaincy has been called into question after England suffered 5-0, 4-1 and 3-0 series defeats to Australia in the Test, ODI and Twenty20 formats respectively.
