Blackburn hope to once again trim their wage bill during the January transfer window, managing director Derek Shaw has revealed.

Rovers made a statement of intent just two days in to the new year by acquiring Hull's Tom Cairney and Cardiff's Rudy Gestede on permanent transfers, giving the duo, who had been on loan at Ewood Park, three-and-a-half-year deals.

Given Blackburn's much-chronicled financial troubles, supporters will not be surprised to hear the emphasis should now shift to ensuring some leave via the exit door.

During the last transfer window, Rovers made a concentrated effort to rid the squad of higher earners such as Morten Gamst Pedersen, Nuno Gomes and Danny Murphy but the work is far from done.

Shaw recently revealed Blackburn are seriously struggling to meet the stipulations of the forthcoming Financial Fair Play rules - with Blackburn facing a potential fine or a transfer embargo as a result - so January could prove a pivotal month.

"It's always busy," Shaw said.

"There are players in, players out, and there's a little bit going on and I'm sure that when some deals get completed everybody will know about that."

Rovers posted losses of £36.5million last year as the reality of relegation from the top flight bit hard and Shaw knows they must focus on trimming the wage bill.

He added: "We managed to do a little bit of that in the last window and it's something we'll try to do again to bring some costs under control. It's a big step from the Premier League down to the Championship.

"We've still got problems with that (Financial Fair Play rules) which has been quite well-documented but we're working our way to the best of our ability.

"It's not easy when you have contracted players and also you want to try and produce a team that can get promoted. But we're working hard on that."
