Sam Robson was delighted to notch a century for an England Performance Programme XI in Australia on Wednesday.

After being asked to bat first at Allan Border Field, Brisbane, the Middlesex batsman starred in the country of his birth against a Queensland Invitational XI.

Number three Robson, whose future was subject of much conjecture until he committed himself to England by joining this tour, gave the Ashes selectors a timely nudge as he plundered 102 off 134 balls before retiring.

Tim Bresnan returned from injury to hit 57 not out as England closed on 376-9 from 96 overs, while Moeen Ali also made 83 and Jos Buttler scored 54.

Bit tricky

Robson, who played Under-19s cricket for Australia but qualified for England in August, told the ECB: "It was a little bit tricky early on, but overall it was a good wicket so I just tried to get stuck in and hang in there and luckily I got a few today.

"It was good to get a bit of time in the middle. I'm really pleased with my start to the tour.

"It's been a really good couple of weeks training here at Brisbane so far and working with all the guys, it's been really good.

"So to put some of the things that we've been working on into practise was really good."

The 24-year-old praised the input of former England batsmen Mark Ramprakash and Graham Thorpe in his development.

"I've done a lot with Ramps the last couple of weeks, I did a lot with him during the summer at Middlesex as well and he's been really good.

"Also I did quite a bit with Graham Thorpe in Loughborough a couple of weeks ago which was really beneficial as well."
