England wicketkeeper Matt Prior is on course to be fit for the opening Ashes Test with Australia as he recovers from a calf injury.

Prior emerged as the main injury doubt ahead of the game in Brisbane which gets under way on Thursday after picking up the problem in the drawn tour match with Australia 'A' in Hobart.

The Sussex player has been able to bat in the nets though and has also been jogging, allowing England bowling coach David Saker to deliver an upbeat assessment on him.

"He is making good progress and obviously we would love him on the park on Thursday," said Saker.

"He has a few days to get that right and I am confident he will be right but that's up to the medical department."

Pace bowler Tim Bresnan is also doing well as he recovers from a back problem.

Bresnan is expected to be available for selection for the second Ashes Test which starts in Adelaide on December 5.

The Yorkshire player looks set to feature in the warm-up match against a Cricket Australia Chairman's side in Alice Springs ahead of the Adelaide Oval clash.

The opening Ashes Test gets under way on Sky Sports 2 HD from 11pm on Wednesday.
