New Year's Day cut down Havana to run out an authoritative winner of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile.
Strong Mandate set a searing pace up front and Gary Stevens was content to track it aboard favourite Havana.
Turning for home he sent the Michael Tabor-owned colt to the front and he looked set to hand the Coolmore team another major success.
However Martin Garcia was busy conjuring a race-winning burst from New Year's Day down the far rail and was in front inside the final furlong to win going away.
It was a sweet success for trainer Bob Baffert who lost his promising filly Secret Compass in the opening Juvenile Fillies'.
An emotional Baffert said: "Coming in here he was telling us in a morning he was ready to go. Martin deserved a win like this. This business is so hard, one minute I lose a great little filly and now I win this."
Pletcher said of Havana: "He ran super, it was his first time around two turns and he just got a little late for the final quarter."
A downcast Stevens said: "I'm devastated. He's a serious horse, he did everything right and we still got beat."
