Richie Gray believes the autumn internationals marks the start of Scotland's 2015 World Cup preparations.

Scotland face Japan, South Africa and Australia at Murrayfield next month, with Scott Johnson's side assembling this week for a three-day training session.

Johnson will be replaced by Clermont Auvergne coach Vern Cotter next year but Gray says the Scottish players are looking even further ahead.

The Castres lock said: "I think Jonno (Johnson) wants to build depth to the squad and he wants to be competitive.

"He wants to win Test matches so over the next three games we will be going out to give it our all, give it our best performances and hopefully come away with wins.

"But I think it would be naive not to look towards the World Cup.

"It is not far away, only two years away or something like that.

"In saying that, we want to perform so we are building towards the Six Nations games, the (South Africa) tour then building towards the World Cup."

Gray's youngster brother Jonny was one of five uncapped players called up by Johnson, and the 19-year-old was delighted to be among some of the players he admired as he was growing up.

"You could see the quality throughout the squad and I'm grateful to be here," he said.

"I just want to make the most of this opportunity, learn from these guys and improve my game."
