The Colorado Avalanche back in winning ways
The Colorado Avalanche bounced back from their first defeat of the season last time out with a 4-2 win over the Buffalo Sabres.
A 4-2 defeat to the Detroit Red Wings ended their perfect start to the campaign although they began in a positive fashion against the Sabres, with Ryan O'Reilly, Gabriel Landeskog and Matt Duchene putting the Avalanche 3-0 ahead.
The San Jose Sharks kept their undefeated record at home intact with a 6-3 victory over the Calgary Flames. Joe Pavelski scored two powerplay goals, while Brent Burns, Scott Hannan, Patrick Marleau and Logan Couture were also on the mark for the Sharks, with Sean Monahan, Mikael Backlund and Jiri Hudler on-target for Calgary.
The Pittsburgh Penguins claimed their fourth successive win after a 4-3 shootout victory over the Vancouver Canucks. Ryan Kesler saw his penalty saved by Marc-Andre Fleury with Evgeni Malkin's the deciding goal in the shootout.
Seth Jones struck with less than 90 seconds remaining as the Nashville Predators ended the Montreal Canadiens' winning run. Montreal had claimed four victories on the bounce, but goals from Shea Weber and Jones coming in-between Brendan Gallagher's fourth goal of the season for the Canadiens saw them lose 2-1.
The Detroit Red Wings also saw their four-game winning streak ended following a 5-2 defeat to the Phoenix Coyotes.
The Red Wings went two up in the opening nine minutes through Pavel Datsyuk and Todd Bertuzzi, but they were left shell shocked as two goals from Mike Ribeiro and further strikes from Antoine Vermette, Martin Hanzal and Mike Smith gave victory to the Coyotes.
Tuukka Rask stopped 23 shots to earn a shutout against the Tampa Bay Lightning, who were thumped 5-0 by the Boston Bruins. David Krejci, Adam McQuaid, Patrice Bergeron, Chris Kelly and Shawn Thornton scored for the Bruins.
Andrei Loktionov, Adam Henrique, Michael Ryder and Dainius Zubrus were all on-target as the New Jersey Devils hammered the New York Rangers 4-0.
The Edmonton Oilers claimed just their second win of the season after a 3-1 success over the Ottawa Senators, with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scoring twice.
The Florida Panthers ended a three-game losing streak after edging out the Minnesota Wild 2-1 and Jiri Tlusty scored his first two goals of the season as the Carolina Hurricanes squeezed past the New York Islanders 4-3.
The Washington Capitals ran out 4-1 winners over the Columbus Blue Jackets, the Chicago Blackhawks defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-1 and the Los Angeles Kings claimed a 5-2 victory over the Dallas Stars.
