Waldemar Fornalik has been sacked as coach of Poland's national team after 15 months in the post.

The Polish Football Association made the announcement less than 24 hours after the team lost 2-0 to England at Wembley.

Poland ended their World Cup qualifying campaign a disappointing fourth in the Group H table - with 13 points from 10 games.

Association chairman Zbigniew Boniek thanked the 50-year-old Fornalik for his time in the job.

As a player, Fornalik was a defender with Ruch Chorzow for whom he made more than 200 appearances during a 12-year career.

A statement from the Polish FA read: "Waldemar has ceased to carry out the functions of national team coach."

A new coach will be named in two weeks and the statement continued: "The key characteristic of the new coach will not be his passport, whether Polish or foreign.

"He will have to ensure a better performance, he will have to ensure our qualification for the next Euros in 2016 and that's the goal I'm setting."

Fornalik added: "It was a special time for me - great emotion, great commitment and work. Many thanks to all those with whom I have worked."
