England's World Cup squad will assemble in South Africa this weeek, but former captain Jamie Peacock will not be there, despite the best efforts of his successor Kevin Sinfield.

Peacock retired from international rugby league in June 2012, but he has enjoyed one of his best seasons with Leeds this year, culminating in his short-listing for the Man of Steel award.

"For me he's been the best forward in the competition this year," Leeds skipper Sinfield said. "But obviously he made a decision and he's stood by it.

"He was weakening at one stage but he's a steely character. The last month or six weeks have been really tough on him away from the game and he feels it's the right thing for him to do.

"As he's said to me a number of times, he's always on the end of a phone and to have that support is fantastic."
