Admir Mehmedi: Freiburg forward battles for the ball
A second-half resurgence from Liberec saw them leave Freiburg with a 2-2 draw in their Europa League Group H opener.
The Bundesliga side were dominant for an hour and eased into a 2-0 lead before half-time but the game changed in the last half-hour as Vladislav Kalitvintsev and Michael Rabusic cancelled out Julian Schuster's penalty and Admir Mehmedi's follow-up.
There was no winner, but both sides suffered red cards as Karim Guede and Sergiy Rybalka exited before full-time.
The hosts were quick out of the blocks, Mehmedi heading Mike Hanke's cross over the bar after just 90 seconds.
He threatened again when his free-kick was gathered by Premysl Kovar and the goalkeeper did even better to tip the Switzerland international's 15th-minute shot round the post.
The German side were swarming the Liberec goal and the inevitable opener came when Ondrej Kusnir fouled Christian Gunter in the box. Schuster took spot-kick duties and tucked home a low shot.
John Delarge missed a wonderful chance to level on the half-hour but could not steer the ball on target from close range and five minutes Mehmedi lashed home from 20 yards to double the lead.
The impressive Kovar did most to keep Liberec in the game, making three fine saves and his effort did not go in vain.
Freiburd did not adequately clear a 66th-minute corner, leaving Kalitvintsev to convert from outside the box.
Within seven minutes there was an equaliser, Rabusic on hand with the finish this time as he steered goalwards from 12 yards.
Guede's second yellow saw him dismissed with 13 minutes remaining but Liberec could not take advantage and lost a player of their own when Rybalka departed in injury-time.
