Super League: Wigan players came to the fore against Huddersfield

Blake Green had his finest match in a Wigan jersey to inspire the Warriors to victory over League Leaders' Shield winners Huddersfield in their opening play-off encounter, says Stevo.

Shaun Wane's team defeated the Giants 22-8 at a damp John Smith's Stadium, with Green notching one try and winger Josh Charnley touching down twice as the Cherry and Whites booked their place in the Super League semi-finals.

"Green had his best-ever game in Wigan colours and Matty Smith was superb, too," said Sky Sports pundit Stevo.

"They knew what they had to do and that was utilise the forwards and get over the advantage line.

"Plus, Michael McIlorum had a wonderful influence in the second half and I thought young Ben Flower was outstanding.

"I honestly thought that without [injured] Sean O'Loughlin, Wigan couldn't do it, but they knuckled down and worked really hard."

Huddersfield - who saw five of their players named in the Super League Dream Team - were conquered just six times over the course of the regular season to top the standings by a point from 2012 Grand Final runners-up Warrington.

But Stevo says the Giants - who must now play the winner of the St Helens-Hull KR clash for a chance to make the last four - struggled to cope with the soggy state of the pitch at home to Wigan, and must make significant improvements in the weeks ahead.

"In wet conditions the kicking game has to be good and it was non-existent in the second-half from Brough."

"Huddersfield will probably be looking for excuses and [Giants coach] Paul Anderson will be thinking that if it had been a drier day, perhaps his side would have been odds-on favourites," added Stevo.

"However, in these conditions the kicking game has to be good and it was non-existent in the second-half from Danny Brough.

"Lessons must be learned because it is not how you start, it is how you finish."
