The New England Patriots and New York Jets both needed late field goals to start the new NFL season, while Adrian Peterson starred in a losing effort for Minnesota at Detroit.

The New England Patriots have won 24 of the last 26 against the Buffalo Bills but their 23-21 success was a nervy affair as they came from behind to win it courtesy of Stephen Gostkowski's field goal five seconds from the end.

Tom Brady threw a pair of touchdown passes to Julian Edelman as he became the ninth player in NFL history to pass for 45,000 yards, but he was also intercepted once and lost a fumble as the Bills hassled him all game long.

Week One results:

Kansas City 28-2 Jacksonville
Seattle 12-7 Carolina
Oakland 17-21 Indianapolis
Tampa Bay 17-18 NY Jets
Tennessee 16-9 Pittsburgh
Minnesota 24-34 Detroit
Cincinnati 21-24 Chicago
Miami 23-10 Cleveland
New England 23-21 Buffalo

Buffalo's rookie quarterback EJ Manuel threw two touchdowns himself as he impressed, while Da'Norris Searcy ran back a fumble recovery 74 yards but it was all to no avail as the Bills suffered late heartbreak.

The New York Jets also won on a late field goal, as they beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 18-17 in dramatic fashion with rookie QB Geno Smith drawing a foul as he scampered for the sideline, enabling Nick Folk to boot the winning field goal.

John Freeman had thought he'd produced the game-winning drive with just 38 seconds left to play but Smith made an immediate statement in the Big Apple.

Peterson treble

Reigning MVP Peterson scored three TDs but poor play from his quarterback Christian Ponder meant that even he couldn't stop the Minnesota Vikings losing 34-24 against the Detroit Lions - who had new signing Reggie Bush as their star.

Bush scored one TD but also had two pulled back, but Joique Bell did find the end zone twice for the Lions who had three interceptions of Ponder.

The Cincinnati Bengals looked to have a comfortable 11-point lead at the Chicago Bears before the hosts came back to win 24-21 thanks to a Matt Forte run and a brilliant catch from Brandon Marshall from Jay Cutler's throw.

Receiver AJ Green has 162 yards and two touchdown catches for the Bengals, but Andy Dalton's two interceptions proved costly as Marc Trestman enjoyed a winning start as the new head coach of the Bears.

Andrew Luck started his second season brilliantly by throwing two TD passes and running in a third as the Indianapolis Colts beat Oakland Raiders 21-17. QB Terrelle Pryor ran for 112 yards in a promising display for Oakland.

New Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs started well under new coach Andy Reid as they battered the Jacksonville Jaguars 28-2 - only an early safety, after the Chiefs had a punt blocked, got the Jags on the board.

The Seattle Seahawks beat Carolina Panthers 12-7 but only after being severely tested by the home team - Russell Wilson's 43-yard TD pass to Jermaine Kearse claimed the hard-fought victory for the Seahawks.

It was a bad start to the season for the Pittsburgh Steelers as they lost 16-9 at home to the Tennessee Titans even after being given the perfect start by Darius Reynaud, who caught the opening kick-off but took it into the end zone for a safety.

The big-spending Miami Dolphins made a winning start to the season with a comfortable 23-10 win over the Cleveland Browns despite rushing for a total of just 20 yards. Trent Richardson managed just 47 yards himself for the Browns while QB Brandon Weedon threw three picks.

The Dallas Cowboys held off a late rally from the New York Giants 36-31. Eli Manning had led the fightback with four touchdown passes - including three to Victor Cruz - however Brandon Carr intercepted to seal the win for the Cowboys.

Greg Zuerlein's 48-yard field goal with 40 seconds left saw the St Louis Rams claim a 27-24 victory over the Arizona Cardinals. Zuerlein landed four field goals in total, while Jared Cook had two touchdown catches on his debuts as the Rams overturned an 11-point deficit to win.
