Tao Geoghegan Hart has enjoyed an outstanding season
Britain's Tao Geoghegan Hart took the lead of the Giro Internazionale della Lunigiana in Italy by climbing to a solo victory on stage one.
The 18-year-old Londoner surged clear of his rivals close to the summit finish at Castelnuovo Magra and hung on to win by five seconds.
There were two Britons in the top five after Scott Davies claimed fifth place, seven seconds back.
Due to bonuses at the line, Geoghegan Hart now leads the four-stage race overall by nine seconds.
It is the latest strong result in a season that earlier saw him finish third in the Junior Paris-Roubaix and top the general classification at the Tour of Istria.
Friday's second stage is a 106.4km route starting and ending in Follo, in north-western Italy.
