Australia forward Hugh McMeniman will miss the rest of the Rugby Championship and autumn tour of Europe due to a shoulder injury.

The injury-plagued back-rower made his first Wallabies appearance since 2008 in Saturday's 47-29 rout by New Zealand, but it was short-lived reprieve.

The Australia Rugby Union have confirmed that McMenamin has been forced to withdraw from their squad after aggravating an existing shoulder complaint he picked up during the Super Rugby season.

Medical staff had examined the left shoulder, fractured earlier this year, and determined that "the best course of action would be a complete reconstruction," the ARU said.

"McMeniman will undergo surgery next week in Brisbane and will be sidelined for six months."

McMenamin made his Australia debut in 2005 but the 29-year-old has won just 22 caps in a career punctuated with injuries to his shoulder, neck and ankle.

Australia have not announced whether they will call up a replacement for Saturday's Bledisloe Cup clash with New Zealand in Wellington.
