Wellington's Westpac Stadium is fit to host Saturday's Rugby Championship clash between New Zealand and Australia.

The stadium was closed as a precaution following an earthquake in the area last Friday. Engineers checked the structure over the weekend and have given it the all-clear.

"It's great news we can host a sell-out crowd in a safe stadium as planned," New Zealand Rugby Union chief Steve Tew said in a statement.

"Public safety is of paramount importance to us, so it was essential we received reassurances from engineers before continuing with our planning."

The stadium did suffer minor damage, such as chipped concrete and broken glass, but repairs will be completed ahead of Saturday's showdown.

Stadium chief executive Shane Harmon said: "We can assure ticket-holders that the stadium is structurally sound and that there is no greater level of risk than existed before the recent earthquakes. Our engineers have said that the building has performed as expected."

The All Blacks won the opening match of the championship - which also served as the three-match Bledisloe Cup opener - 47-29 in Sydney on Saturday.

*The match is live on Sky Sports 3 HD and Sky Sports 3 from 8am on Saturday.
