Chesterfield's transfer activity this summer has left the club more than £100,000 over budget.
Ahead of his first full campaign in charge manager Paul Cook has overhauled his squad following last season's disappointment of missing out on the play-offs. Eight players have left during the close season with 10 new signings brought into the Proact Stadium, including the high profile arrivals of Gary Roberts and Ian Evatt. The Spireites' summer business has made them on of the promotion favourites in Sky Bet League Two this season and Cook believes the club's investment will prove worthwhile. "The chairman said the other day that we're around £100,000 over budget but in reality that only equates to one player," Cook said. "Last season we were £100,000 under budget and we didn't get into the top seven all season. Last season our finishing position was our highest league position and over the course of 46 games that is not good enough, so if we go up, which is the aim this season, then £100,000 could look like a small price to pay. But it's not anything we are worried about." Chesterfield chairman Dave Allen added: "We are currently £130,000 over budget. Don't worry about the debts, we'll deal with it."
