Louis Oosthuizen and Peter Hanson both failed to complete their first rounds at the Open Championship before being forced to withdraw through injury.

Oosthuizen, who cruised to the title at St Andrews in 2010, was forced to pull out with a neck injury midway through his round, while Hanson lasted only five holes before quitting with a back problem.

Hanson has been struggling with his back since May, and was the only member of Europe's victorious Ryder Cup team to miss the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.

The Swede admitted on the eve of the tournament that he was "50-50", but he decided to tee up after treatment - therefore denying a place for first reserve Joost Luiten.

Oosthuizen was four over after eight holes playing alongside Tiger Woods and Graeme McDowell, but he appeared to be having trouble walking between shots and called it a day after teeing off at the ninth.

The 30-year-old South African also pulled out of last month's US Open due to the injury, and he is now expected to be sidelined until after the PGA Championship next month.

"I am bitterly disappointed to have to pull out of The Open and it looks likely now I am going to have to take some time off and give my neck the rest I've been told it needs," said Oosthuizen.

"I thought I would be okay as I warmed up pretty well on the range but then as the round progressed the pain in my neck translated into my hips and I found it increasingly uncomfortable to walk.

"The Open means so much to me and having to withdraw in this manner is extremely disappointing on top of also having to pull out of Merion."

Hanson's compatriot Alexander Noren became the third withdrawal of the tournament, pulling out with a wrist injury after completing a 12-over 83.
