Ricky Ponting scored an unbeaten 169 in his final first-class innings in Surrey's clash against Notts.

The former Australian captain reached his score on day four of their County Championship division one match against Nottinghamshire at The Oval.

It leaves him with a first-class runs tally of 24,150.

"It is a nice way to end my first-class career," Ponting told Sky Sports. "I'd have preferred it to be on the winning team but we haven't played well enough on a couple of days of this game to force a result.

"I played how the team required me to play today. I've always prided mysewlf on playing the way my team needs me to and more often than not that's enabled us to win games."

His three-figure score is a fitting end to the career of one of modern cricket's greatest players.

His 17-year Test career yielded 13,378 runs over 168 matches at an average of 51.85, making him his country's leading Test run-scorer.

He also scored 13,704 one-day runs at an average of 42.03.

All-time list

With 48, he has won more games as captain than any other Australian and is second only to South Africa's Graeme Smith in the all-time list.

During his one-day career, he won the World Cup three times with Australia, in 1999, 2003 and 2007.

However, he also oversaw three Ashes defeats to England in 2005, 2009 and 2010/11.

Ponting began the day on 41 with Surrey 186-2 in their second innings and trailing Notts' 410 first-innings total by 26.

He lost overnight partner Arun Harinath, along with Zander De Bruyn and Steven Davies as Notts made inroads into the home order.

But Zafar Ansari and then Jade Dernbach proved resilient partners for Ponting as Surrey reached 395-8 - a lead of 183 - as they game ended in a draw.
