Surrey were indebted to some brilliant death bowling from Jade Dernbach as they recorded a 10-run victory over Sussex at Hove.

Replying to the visiting side's total of 157-6, the Sharks looked set to come out on top in the Friends Life t20 South Group clash when they reached 139-5 with two overs remaining.

However Azhar Mahmood conceded only four from the penultimate over and then Dernbach - back in action for his county following a period away on international duty with England - gave up the same in the final over.

The seamer claimed fine figures of 3-15 from his four overs, including dismissing England Twenty20 team-mate Luke Wright for 11 in his first spell.

Sussex ended up on 147-7; Rory Hamilton-Brown made 34 against his former side while Scott Styris weighed in with 35 from just 19 deliveries, including hitting three huge sixes.

Mike Yardy then appeared to be steering Sussex home before being run out for 44 in an eventful 20th over. Dernbach rounded out proceedings in impressive fashion, bowling Matt Machan.

Surrey had earlier been indebted to a late onslaught from Mahmood (23 off 13 balls) and Gary Wilson (31 off 20) for getting them up to 150 and beyond.

The pair helped take 40 off the final three overs, ex-Surrey paceman Chris Jordan coming in for some particularly heavy punishment as he ended with figures of 2-48.

Jason Roy contributed 42 at the top of the Surrey order before both he and Australian Glenn Maxwell fell in the same over from Chris Liddle (2-19). West Indian Dwayne Smith also claimed two wickets for Sussex.
