Andrea Pirlo: Scored his 13th international goal in Confederations Cup victory over Mexico
Andrea Pirlo admitted that scoring a free kick in his 100th game for Italy was a 'childhood dream'.
The midfielder was voted Man of the Match after his free kick opener gave Italy the lead against Mexico in the Confederations Cup.
Javier Hernandez equalised from the spot but Mario Balotelli gave the Azzurri victory.
"It was something I could only dream of since childhood. It was a free kick, one of my goals"
Pirlo, who made his Italy debut in 2002 and joined Juventus on a free transfer from AC Milan two years ago, spoke of his joy at marking such a memorable occasion with a goal.
"It's a wonderful feeling to reach 100 caps and mark it with a goal at the historic Maracana," Pirlo said.
"It was something I could only dream of since childhood. It was a free kick, one of my goals. I am happy with the victory and that I made the fans happy. The goalkeeper? He jumped for it and perhaps thought he wasn't going to get there, so pulled out.
"In fact, I should've scored more goals tonight, but the one I put under the wall was charged down by my team-mates.
"It wasn't easy to play in this heat and atmosphere, but the opening game is always fundamental, as it helps your confidence going forward in the tournament."
The victory over Mexico means that Italy have now lost just one of their last 23 competitive matches, the Euro 2012 final against Spain, in a run stretching back to the last World Cup.
