The British and Irish Lions team doctor has delivered mixed news about the fitness of Wales duo Jamie Roberts and George North ahead of the first Test against Australia.

Centre Roberts is a "grave doubt" for Saturday's showdown in Brisbane, according to James Robson, after suffering a hamstring strain in the win over the New South Waratahs at the weekend.

However, winger North is making good progress from his hamstring injury and has a "great chance" of facing the Wallabies.

Robson also revealed England centre Manu Tuilagi is making a good recovery from his shoulder injury and only Ireland winger Tommy Bowe, who has fractured a bone in his hand, is likely to join Roberts in being ruled out.

Speaking at the North Sydney Oval on Monday morning, Robson said: "Jamie's very well this morning, his scans indicate one thing, his demeanour another (but) he is a 'grave doubt' for this weekend.

"You only had to see how much discomfort he was in at the weekend. However, further assessment will be made later in the week as to his availability going forward.

"Jamie Roberts is not likely to be available (for Saturday), Tommy Bowe is highly unlikely but that was never the plan, other than that everyone else is in line.

"George is an exceptional character and has worked really hard. He is back to running today. He is doing very, very well.

"An accurate assessment of his availability for selection will take place on Wednesday, but at the moment I think he is doing very well."

Powerful inside centre Roberts, an almost certain starter in the Lions midfield, pulled up with the injury in the 66th minute of the 47-17 victory over the Waratahs.

Roberts, a doctor, had expressed doubt whether it was a hamstring strain but scans showed a strain, albeit low on the level of seriousness, which is likely to rule him out of the Suncorp Stadium clash.

Roberts is likely to be replaced in the starting line-up by compatriot Jonathan Davies, who looks set to start in a midfield partnership with Irishman Brian O'Driscoll.
