James Roby: Says the England call is a 'bonus' after recovering from injury

James Roby is determined to repay the faith of England coach Steve McNamara in Friday's game against the Exiles.

The St Helens hooker has been recalled to the England team for the international origin clash at Warrington after sitting out last year's autumn international series, despite failing to play a full match for his club since recovering from ankle surgery.

Roby got the call when Wigan's Michael McIlorum was ruled out through injury, although McNamara had the option of selecting in-form hookers Danny Houghton and Shaun Lunt and Roby is grateful for the opportunity.

"Now Steve has put his faith in me, I need to perform to say thank-you and send a message out that I am back from injury and ready to play at this level."

"I'm just getting back into it so it is a bonus," said Roby at the England camp at Loughborough University.

"I understood the position I was in after not playing for such a long period.

"I know there have been a lot of players in my position playing well while I was out and, if Steve had decided to pick one of them, I would have totally understood.

"There is a lot of competition for places, which is only good for England rugby league and, hopefully at the end of the year everyone will still be playing well and it can bring the best out in players.

"Up until him phoning me, I was in limbo, wondering if he would go with someone who has been playing more regularly, and I'm made up to be involved.

"Now Steve has put his faith in me, I need to perform to say thank-you and send a message out that I am back from injury and ready to play at this level."
