Richie Gray admits there is plenty of room for improvement after the British and Irish Lions defeated the Reds.

The second row impressed during the 22-12 win in Brisbane but the Reds exposed some defensive frailties and outscored the tourists by two tries to one.

The home side flew out of the traps in the opening quarter, playing some thrilling open rugby and the Lions struggled to contain them.

"That was a big step up from the Barbarians game, but one we fully expected," said Gray.

Gray - Still room for improvement

"We knew they were going to throw everything at us and pull out their bag of tricks.

Work on

"In the first 20 minutes we didn't react as quickly as we should have done, but we dug in, sorted things out and I felt we did well defensively from that point on.

"We could have reacted better to quick lineouts, quick taps; just getting in position better. But we'll work on that. That's a great game for us because it gives us things to work on. "

The Lions led 16-7 at half-time thanks to an opportunistic try from Ben Youngs and the boot of Owen Farrell, and Gray felt they handled the greasy conditions well in the second period.

"The key messages at half-time were to tighten things up," said the Castres-bound lock.

"The conditions weren't great in the end so it was just a matter of ball retention and putting pressure on them. I felt we did that for large periods of the second half, bar the breakaway try.

"It's another win. It was a tough game and one that gives us things to work on. It shows us where we are and we'll build from here."
