Ajax defender Joel Veltman has signed a new deal with the reigning Dutch champions to keep him at the club until 2017.

The 21-year-old renewed his existing deal, which ran until June 30 2015, with improved terms to commit his long-term future to the club.

Veltman, a former Holland Under-19 international, said: "The 2013/14 season will be a very important year for me.

"I had a contract for two years and that this is now being extended gives me great confidence for the future."

Director of football affairs Marc Overmars spoke highly of the defender, who made his first-team debut last August.

"He is a talented defender with the right attitude," Overmars told ajax.nl.

"He is definitely a player with potential. After several talks with his management company EFM International and Joel, we have come up with the deal.

"The confidence we have in him at Ajax has come reflected in this new agreement."
