Glen Chapple had a day to remember as Lancashire remained on top of their LV= County Championship Division Two clash with Gloucestershire at Aigburth.

Chapple only scored 14 runs and took a couple of wickets but they took him through the 8,000 first-class runs barrier and included his 900th first-class wicket as Lancashire reduced the visitors to 143-4 in reply to 310 all out.

Gloucestershire dominated what play was possible before lunch thanks to the performance of teenage seamer Craig Miles, dismissing Simon Katich five short of a century, Wayne White first ball and Simon Croft for 60 in a superb 23-ball spell.

That left Lancashire struggling on 222-8 but their tail wagged to the effect of 88 more runs, 66 of those in a 10th wicket stand between Kyle Hogg (45) and Simon Kerrigan (21).

Chapple was soon in the action with the ball and when Andrea Agathangelou held on to a catch to dismiss Michael Klinger for only two, the 39-year-old's wait for wicket No 900 was over.

Chris Dent and Dan Housego put on 39 for the second wicket before Chapple struck again, trapping Dent in front for 18, and Housego made it only as far as 25 before being caught behind off White.

When Hamish Marshall (4) edged through to Gareth Cross off Hogg, the visitors were teetering on 66-4, but Alex Gidman (54) and Benny Howell (32) proved far harder to dislodge and go into Friday's play on an unbeaten stand of 77.
