Israel Folau: Out to emulate Jason Robinson

Israel Folau wants to emulate Jason Robinson and become the latest rugby league convert to star in a Lions Test series.

Folau was named in the 25-man Australia squad for this summer's eagerly-awaited series having played just 12 matches for New South Wales Waratahs since switching from Aussie Rules football.

Folau has been playing at full-back, and has scored seven tries in his 12 games, but Wallabies coach Robbie Deans is also considering playing him on the wing.

Before his stint in Aussie Rules, Folau played in the NRL, and his profile in all three sports makes him one of the best known faces in Australian sport.

England's Jason Robinson was picked for the 2001 Lions tour despite being in the early stages of his career in union following a code switch and he made a major impression on the series.

Folau, 24, admits his selection in the Wallabies squad is "surreal," but he believes that as an unknown quantity to the tourists, he can emulate Robinson.

"I'm very confident in my own ability but I'm not guaranteed to get a starting spot so I'm just happy to be named in the 25-man squad," Folau told

"I haven't seen much of the previous series, obviously, and with their current players now, me personally I don't know too many of them.

"I guess I'm still new to knowing all the faces of the game but that might be a thing that could work in my favour.

"I feel very honoured to be a part of it and it makes it more special with this series only coming around every 12 years.

"You've probably seen when Jason Robinson made the transition from league, he did a great job," he added to Fox Sports.

Robinson went on to win the World Cup with England in 2003, and had a hugely successful, decade-long career at the top of the sport.

Folau though remains unsure where his future lies.

"It just comes down to what I enjoy the most and at the moment I'm really enjoying it and I get the chance to go into camp and experience this whole campaign and it's certainly going to come into consideration when I make my decision," he said.
