Former England full-back Delon Armitage has become embroiled in row with past and present players after taunting an opponent while scoring the match-winning try for Toulon in their Heineken Cup triumph.

Armitage's try set up the chance for Jonny Wilkinson to kick the conversion that saw Toulon overcome Clermont Auvergne 16-15 at the Aviva Stadium on Saturday.

But the way in which Armitage waved at Brock James as he raced away from the Clermont fly-half to score the try, has drawn criticism from former England hooker Brian Moore as well as Harlequins fly-half Nick Evans and Scotland pair Chris Cusiter and Max Evans.

Just after Armitage had touched down, Moore tweeted: "If a player did to me what Armitage has just done I'd have to chin him after the touchdown."

Armitage later sent a sharp and strong riposte to Moore on twitter.

Other players had their say on twitter with Nick Evans tweeting: "Delon Armitage better hope Toulon win after that. #noclass#"

Cusiter tweeted: "Since when did the values of rugby include taunting an opponent in the act of scoring a try? Disgraceful."

While Max Evans wrote: "Surprised Armitage hasn't learnt a few things from such a class act in @JonnyWilkinson."

Armitage is not unaccustomed to controversy having previously been arrested over an assault in a Torquay nightclub, banned for pushing and verbally abusing a doping officer as well as suspensions for punching Northampton's Stephen Myler and Bath's Dave Attwood in on-field incidents.
