Tommy Bowe: Knee injury almost cost him a Lions place
Tommy Bowe is determined to get over the disappointment of his last British and Irish Lions tour as he prepares to take on Australia this summer.
The Ireland wing is still haunted by the second Test in South Africa in 2009, when Morne Steyn's long-distance penalty two minutes into added time snatched a 28-25 victory for the Springboks.
But Bowe believes this year's Lions squad have the ability and the team unity to earn a first series victory since 1997.
"I have plenty of games under my belt now and hopefully I'll get a few more before the Test series."
Recalling the 2009 defeat in Pretoria, in which the Lions had led until the 76th minute, Bowe said: "It was probably one of the most disappointing stages of my career to lose the second Test against South Africa in such heart-breaking fashion.
"But you can see the excitement in this squad from day one. We are coming together as a really strong bunch of players, and if we can get things right we can bond together as a team and I think we have a great opportunity to come away from Australia with a series win."
Bowe's place in Warren Gatland's squad had been in serious doubt after a knee injury ruled him out of the entire Six Nations, but he impressed enough in his comeback for Ulster to earn a seat on the plane.
"It's been fairly tough times," he added. "I've had a pretty injury-ridden season and to have come back after playing only two-and-a-half games before the selection was leaving it a bit tight.
"But for the coaches to have confidence in me to pick me, I have plenty of games under my belt now and hopefully I'll get a few more before the Test series and hopefully I'll find a bit of form and match fitness.
"I'm very excited, I'm delighted to be here. It's going to be an exciting and tough couple of weeks ahead but I think we can do the business."
