Mitchell Cole: Had a great passion for football

Stevenage are preparing for an emotional evening when they host the Mitchell Cole benefit match on Tuesday.

A Stevenage XI take on a Mitchell Cole XI at Broadhall Way in midweek in memory of their former player, who died due to a heart condition last December aged just 27.

A host of former Boro players such as Steve Morison and Barry Hayles, and current Premier League stars including West Ham's Joe Cole - Mitchell's brother-in-law - Kevin Nolan and Andy Carroll are taking part.

Current Stevenage manager Graham Westley and former boss Mark Stimson will manage the two teams.

Westley said: "Mitch was an outstanding footballer. I always knew when he was in my team that he had the ability to single handedly turn a game. He was a hugely courageous man.

"To play the game he loved, knowing the risks he faced was a very brave choice. It emphasises the love he felt for football."

Stimson added: "It was a great pleasure and honour to both coach and know Mitchell."

Tickets cost £10 for adults and £5 for under-18s with proceeds going to the Cardiomyopathy Association.
