Dean Brownlie and BJ Watling hit half-centuries before New Zealand declared at 289-5 on the opening day of their tour match against Derbyshire.

Left-arm seamer Mark Footitt claimed 4-65 for Derbyshire, who reached 24-1 in reply at stumps on the first of three days.

Derbyshire chose to bowl after winning the toss and Footitt struck three times to help reduce the tourists - who are without Test skipper Brendon McCullum and Ross Taylor for this match due to their IPL commitments - to 126-4.

Footitt's new-ball partner Alasdair Evans (1-52) bowled Hamish Rutherford for 13 in the 10th over.

Peter Fulton (21) soon followed lbw to Footitt, who also removed Kane Williamson (43), Martin Guptill and Brownlie (77) - all caught behind by ex-Warwickshire wicketkeeper Richard Johnson.

Brownlie struck 12 fours in his 138-ball stay and put on 116 with Watling, who was unbeaten on 77 alongside Tom Latham (21no) when stand-in captain Williamson declared.

Derbyshire openers Billy Godleman (9no) and Chesney Hughes (9) put on 24 before left-arm seamer Neil Wagner (1-1) bowled Hughes with the final ball of the day.

New Zealand's schedule includes another warm-up game against England Lions next week, followed by two Tests and three ODIs.
