Scotland winger Sean Maitland has described the past year as "a rollercoaster" after being named in the British and Irish Lions squad for the tour to Australia.

The 24-year-old was called into the Scotland squad for the first time in January and earned his first cap against England in the Six Nations, during which he made five appearances.

And now the Glasgow player, who won world titles with New Zealand at under-19 and under-20 level before committing to the country of his grandparents, will join the Lions for their three-Test tour down under, beginning in June.

"It's been a rollercoaster," he told the Scottish Rugby Union website.

"I came over here [from New Zealand] with goals in mind to achieve, firstly to represent Scotland. That happened and what an experience the Six Nations was.

Quality

"It just happened to be a British and Irish Lions year and I'm very lucky to be named in the squad.

"There is a lot of quality and it will be difficult to get into the team. The hard work starts now."

Maitland's Glasgow team-mate Stuart Hogg also made the 37-man Lions squad and he added: "It's a pretty exciting couple of months ahead and I'm looking forward to it.

"I screamed like a little girl [when I found out] to be honest. All the hard work starts now.

"I've got a league to win with Glasgow first and foremost. After that, it's all about working hard and getting a starting jersey."
