A charge down from Bryan Habana proved crucial as the Stormers clinched a 18-16 win over the Hurricanes.

Habana was quick out the blocks to stop Beauden Barrett adding the extras to Matt Proctor's try on the stroke of half-time.

And those missed two points would ultimately prove to be the difference as the Stormers held on to move up to seventh in the Super Rugby standings.

Michael Rhodes and Gio Aplon both crashed over for tries during a rip-roaring encounter at FMG Stadium in Palmerston North, while Joe Pietersen was able to land two penalties and a conversion in blustery conditions.

Rhodes drove over in the corner in the first half while Jeremy Thrush was in the sin-bin for collapsing a maul, and Aplon crashed over in the second half after Duane Vermeulen had made the initial break off the base of the scrum.

While Pietersen landed his kicks when it mattered the most, Barrett had a day to forget with the boot.

As well as having his effort charged down, he also missed a penalty and another conversion attempt.

He did land two early penalties, while his superb miss pass to Proctor sent the winger over for the Hurricanes' first try.

Andre Taylor also crossed the whitewash following a good spell of Hurricanes pressure, however the Stormers were able to shut up shop to snatch the win.
