Workington booked their place in the fifth round of the Tetley's Challenge Cup at the expense of Cumbrian rivals Whitehaven with a 16-12 triumph at the Recreation Ground.

Both sides managed two tries apiece in the contest, meaning it was the boot of Whitehaven scrum-half Carl Forber that proved the difference between the two sides.

Forber converted Brett Carter's 27th-minute try to make it 6-6 at the break, James Cameron having earlier broken the deadlock with a score that was converted by Jamie Rooney.

Former Wakefield half-back Rooney kicked a penalty to put Whitehaven back in front, only for the visitors to reply with four points from Forber. However, he passed on the kicking duties to Carter after Callum Phillips had touched down, making the score 16-8.

Jessie Joe Parker gave the home team hope of a comeback with a try after 73 minutes but they were unable to deny their opponents a place in Monday's draw.

Barrow tipped out

Halifax, though, will be in the hat after they comfortably saw off Barrow 52-6, Lee Patterson leading the charge with a try and eight goals in the rout.

Ryan Fieldhouse, Scott Murrell and Anthony Thackeray all crossed twice for Halifax, five-time winners of the competition, with further tries coming from Luke Ambler and Craig Ashall.

York put paid to any thoughts of there being two French teams in the last 16 as they squeezed past Toulouse 30-28 at Huntington Stadium.

Tommy Carr kicked five goals, the last of them proving the match-winner in the 76th minute; he had also touched down in the first half of a see-saw game that would have gone to extra time had the visitors been able to add the extras after Bastien Ader's try at the death.
