Former England fly-half Jonny Wilkinson has signed a new one-year contract with French club Toulon.

The 33-year-old, who is the second highest points scorer in Test history, has been with Toulon since 2009 and his previous deal was due to run out at the end of the current season.

He was considering retirement before undergoing successful groin surgery in January.

His recent form has been excellent and he produced a superb performance to help his team beat Leicester in the Heineken Cup quarter-finals, kicking six penalties and a late drop-goal in his side's 21-15 win over the Tigers in the south of France.

The former Newcastle player, who played 91 Tests for England and kicked the winning drop-goal in the final of the 2003 World Cup, has stated he would like to play for the British and Irish Lions in their upcoming tour of Australia.

However, he has also admitted it is unlikely that coach Warren Gatland will select him for the tour.
