NHL side the Boston Bruins have postponed Monday night's scheduled game with the Ottawa Senators due to bomb blasts at the Boston Marathon.

Two explosions near the finishing line have caused fatalities and left many more seriously injured. Around 27,000 runners were taking part in the marathon in the annual event.

MLB side the Boston Red Sox had already played on Monday, following the tradition of early games on Patriots Day at Fenway Park, beating the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 3-2.

The team were leaving for the airport in advance of their upcoming series in Cleveland when news of the explosions broke.

The Boston Celtics were fixtureless on Monday, but are due to be at home to the Indiana Pacers on Tuesday night.

The Celtics put a short statement on Twitter, which read: "The Celtics family sends its thoughts and prayers to the friends and families affected by today's tragedy in Boston. Stay safe."
